Who doesn't love Barbie, the blonde blue eyed doll who wears pink? We all do. I went to see the move for sentimental reasons but the movie was not as I expected. I was hoping for some variation of a love story between Barbie and Ken but I was a bit disappointed I must admit. On the other hand I was quite intrigued by the plot and what it means.
Let's point out the obvious first, we all love Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, we could not ask for a better couple, shame there was no romance or even a kiss or anything of that nature that we all love in movies! A very aesthetically pleasing movie though.
Without too many spoilers , the move opens a conversation about men and women in the modern society. The society has changed a lot in the recent decades and is now completely different with the roles of men and women being slightly reversed to put it mildly. Barbie explores what it is like to live in the real world and experiencing the struggles of real women. Whereas Ken who has been living in matriarchy his entire 'doll life' has found out what is really going on and rebels against it. He just loves being a 'macho'.
Even though the movie is promoted as a fun and lighthearted comedy , which it is, I loved the comedy aspect of it, it also explored the dark side of being a human and of living in the modern society. To be honest I enjoyed that as well as it gives it depth. However I am not sure if it is suitable for children or even teens as the dark exploration is really deep and even as an adult it was a bit shocking for me. So any parents out there please check what the movie is really about before you make the wrong decision.
There are some very interesting references in the movie which gives it even more depth, for example the the biblical reference of Barbie choosing between two shoes , a high heel and an ugly Birkenstock sandal to symbolise the knowledge of good and evil , the choice is served by a 'serpent' - a weird Barbie in snake skin boots who suggests that Barbie must escape the 'paradise' ( the perfect Barbieland) and explore the world. This also reminds me of a scene in Martix, the are also some references to Matrix at the end of the movie and even Lucy, a futuristic movie with Scarlett Johansson where it explores the creation of human kind. Or perhaps a new creature altogether as the last scene of Barbie is also very poignant. This one I will not reveal here , you have to watch the movie.
Overall a thought provoking movie , not something I was expecting from Barbie let's be honest, nonetheless very fun and enjoyable.
